• Kelley Stoltz: The Past Was Faster The 5 people, 1 baby, 3 dogs and 2 cats that lived in Kelley's house during the album's recording had no real qualitative critiques or descriptions of The Past Was Faster; they mostly asked Kelley to stop playing the drums so loud. Kelley wrote this collection of songs over a period of 5 years while living in New York City, Detroit, and San Francisco. After settling in San Francisco, Kelley recorded all of the songs on a 4-track, playing every instrument on the album. When he finished it up he gave it to Monte Vallier of Swell, who did some truly inspired production and sonic janitorial work on it--the end result is a collection of guitar-driven instrumentals (Emerald Stew) that sit comfortably next to quiet introspections (Permafrost) which, in turn, nestle against expansive, epic psychedelia (The Captain & Vapor Trail).
